"Fizz and Ginger" - Chicago Fringe Opera

Fizz & Ginger traces the steps of the 1920s New Yorker nightlife reviewer, Lipstick, as she enters a party in pursuit of a story. Hot on the heels of her rum-running boyfriend Benny, she finds him at The Crossroads, mixed with company she’s never seen before. Old Tom Bullock is in town slinging drinks fresh out of his cocktail book while Marjorie croons the tunes of a lover lost to the Great War. Nellie, a writer for Harlem’s ‘The Messenger’ magazine, is there to support her bohemian best friend Bruce who is necking with a man he shouldn’t be necking with. With a jazz combo, this Chicago premiere pays homage to Lipstick’s reviews from the ‘New Yorker’ archives.

FIZZ & GINGER contains themes of racism, alcoholism, and police brutality, as well as profanity and simulated drug use.  Theatrical haze is used in this production.

The Consul

Angela performs the role of the Secretary on 9/24, 9/30, 10/6, and 10/8.

Join us for our long-awaited return to the work of Gian Carlo Menotti. The Consul was written in response to World War II, and yet the story remains untethered in time as it explores how we address humanitarian crises.

Magda and her family are desperate to escape an unsafecountry, yet are relentlessly hindered by bureaucratic red tape. When appearing at the consulate to receive help, Magda is met with a chilling, apathetic Secretary who is numb to the stories churning around her. Faced with indifference, Magda delivers a stunning rebuke for the way we treat our fellow humans in need. While Menotti skillfully focuses the story on Magda, he gently lifts a mirror to our society through the rule-abiding Secretary. The Consul challenges us to look inward and ask ourselves, "What would I do?"

As a final note, this is Third Eye Theatre Ensemble’s 10th and final season. Come join us for one last show where together we can “see, imagine, and converse.”

Approximate run time is 2 hours and 15 minutes, including 1 intermission.

Beowulf

Beowulf by Hans Lash

Angela will be playing the role of The Mother on 9/2, 9/4, and 9/10.

Beowulf is a name that conjures impressions of brawny strength pitted against monstrous beasts. But composer and librettist Han Lash’s Beowulf introduces us to a different sort of hero. Our Beowulf is a military doctor, who while safely at home, is still plagued by desperate decisions made on the battlefield. While he cares for his aging mother, his past seeps into his present. We quickly see that an absence of past conflict does not equal present peace.

Mirroring so many veterans who must cope with and recover from traumatic events, Beowulf shines light on the pressures placed on our modern-day heroes and reexamines what it means to have mercy.

After all, when the fight is over, our heroes still have to battle the monsters within.

[CONTENT WARNING: This production uses flashing lights and references themes of war trauma, medical trauma, death, dying, and mental health. Please reach out for a more detailed explanation.]

Stitch | Witness

Third Eye Theatre Ensemble will present a digital live double bill on Oct. 17, 2020.

The performance will feature Juliet Palmer’s “Stitch” and Alexandra Enyart’s “Witness.” The cast includes Rena Ahmed, Angela Born, Mary Lutz Govertsen, and Alexandra Enyart.

“Stich,” an a cappella opera for three voices and three sewing machines, tells the story of three women trapped in manufacturing for the oppressive fast fashion industry. In “Witness,” Enyart explores transgender identity and what it means to live “unseen.”

“60 percent of trans people attempt suicide and my goal is to lower that number. This project is about my personal battle to not become part of that 60 percent,” said Enyart on the official website. “I am taking the imperfect action I can take to tell stories that can be meaningful and relevant to the audiences that see them.”

Stitch

Third Eye Theatre Ensemble will present the U.S. premiere of Juliet Palmer and Anna Chatterton’s “Stitch” on June 14-15, 2019.

“Stitch” is an a cappella opera for three women and three sewing machines. The work had its world premiere in 2018 in Toronto where it received Dora Nominations for Outstanding New Opera and Outstanding Production.

The cast for the U.S. showcases will include Rena Ahmed, Angela Born, and Mary Lutz. The opera will be directed by Rose Freeom with Alexandra Enyart conducting.

Per Palmer’s official website the opera’s program notes stated: “From the abuse of the sweatshop to the fantasy of costume and the empowerment of sewing-it-yourself, the sewing machine has been a force for liberation and exploitation since its invention in the 19th century. Hemmed in by the language of sewing and the inexorable rhythm of the machine, three women fight to find space for imagination and individuality. ‘Stitch’ gives voice to the unseen women who clothe us all.”

Patience and Sarah

Patience / Patience and Sarah / Paula Kimper

Angela is proud to join Third Eye Theatre Ensemble in their production of Patience and Sarah, the first opera to tell a love story between two women. Based on the lives of 19th century American painter Mary Ann Willson and her partner “Miss Brundage,” this stunning opera features an entirely female creative team with a female composer, librettist, and novelist. Themes of self-acceptance, forgiveness, and autonomy are woven throughout a tapestry of violence, judgement, and erasure. But throughout it all, the strength of the female spirit soars as we watch Patience and Sarah struggle against class barriers, family expectations, and societal boundaries in order to embrace each other and their own identities.

Angela will be performing the role on 10/6/18, 10/12/18, 10/14/18, 10/19/18, and 10/21/18.

Friday and Saturday performances will begin at 7:30 pm.
